🦋 IC Information

Character Name: Cassandra de Rolo
Age: 12-13ish
Canon: Critical Role
Canon Point: Pre-stream, around two years into her captivity with the Briarwoods. Give or take.
Character History: here.
Canon Abilities: In Critical Role proper, Cassandra shows no signs of magical or supernatural abilities, but she possibly does, given that we never learn her rogue archetype. A lot of her abilities and skills are learned and taught. She’s skilled in fighting, especially with swords and daggers. And her mother made sure that she taught her youngest daughter all the roguish skills she had, so stealth, lock-picking, evasion, etc. (Cassandra’s class levels are in rogue, so it makes sense.)

She’s noble-born, the daughter of the ruling family of Whitestone, so she’s very well educated. It runs in her family. Only more so, because she is an avid seeker of knowledge. She grew up learning politics and history and languages and all the things needed to rule a city. And she’s immensely skilled in it all. Also dance, and music (she’s very skilled on several instruments, as well as singing), and needlework. The other side of being noble-born.

We don’t know her rogue archetype, we never get to see her NPcharacter sheet, so it could be any one of them. I lean more towards arcane trickster, assassin, inquisitive, mastermind, or thief. They seem the most fitting for her.
Inventory: The bloody dress she’s wearing, and boots/shoes. Lockpicks. A dagger hidden away from her most recent escape attempt.

🦋 Personality

Option 1: Answer the following questions. Elaborate on the answer, especially your characters thoughts and feelings surrounding the answer. For Canon Characters, you can choose four questions. For Original Characters, you will need to choose six questions. Keep the word count to 150-400 per question.
  1. Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?
  2. Cassandra absolutely believes in magic. It would be hard not to, given how intrinsic a part of Exandria it is. People are able to use magic, or are granted it by their god/goddess/being of worship every day. She’s probably related to a couple of them. And might be able to use a little herself. (We don’t know what her archetype as a rogue is, but it could very well be arcane trickster.)

She has seen it used, has had it used against her. Which is why she has complicated feelings about magic. Certain types, at least. And by certain types it’s really just one type. Delilah Briarwood is a wizard in the school of necromancy, and Casandra thinks that that is a vile, twisted type of magic. Wrong, in so very many ways. That hatred of it does influence her feelings towards magic as a whole, but she can’t help but still think of it as something wonderful and powerful. Something that in the wrong hands can be used for horrible things. Which is why she would be hesitant to use any, herself. Too many memories related to the vile use of magic.
  3. What mythological creature would your character most like to be? Which do they identify with? Which would they dread being? Feel free to use our Bestiary for reference.
  4. Cassandra would most like to be something with wings. Something with the ability to fly and be free. A Pegasus, or an alicorn. Or a dragon. (Which is ironic, considering what happens later in canon.) Something that would let her be wild. Untamed. It’s freedom she craves more than anything. When she lets herself. Or something that would let her hide. Like a dryad, maybe. Being able to just… be a tree, might be as freeing as any of the others.

The one she would most identify with is harder. A banshee, maybe. She’s seen so much death and destruction that being something that carries it with them, almost, even though they warn for it, would be fitting. Or a grim. She is a thing in transition, after all. She isn’t the girl she was before the murder of her family and her captivity.

The mythological creature that she would most dread being would be vampire. The thought of becoming one of the things that has fed off her so often, that helped kill her family, horrifies her. She would hate it with every fibre of her being. And hate herself.
  5. If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?
  6. She would be torn, and the wish she would make would vary depending on her headspace. One wish she might make if there were no consequences, it would be for the return of her family to life. All of them. Her mother, father, all her siblings. She wants them back. She misses them so much. And she’s not had a chance to actually mourn them. She went from watching them die, to hiding, to rescuing Percy, to escaping, to being shot with arrows and then watching her rescuers die and being taken prisoner by the Briarwoods. To watching her family’s bodies hang from the Sun Tree and trying to survive. To escape. All without being able to truly mourn the people she’s lost.

Another wish she might make would be for the Briarwoods and all their allies to die. Preferably painfully. She wants them GONE, wants them to suffer consequences for their actions. She wants to never have to look upon their faces ever again.

The last, and something she yearns for, dreams of, wants more than anything and keeps fighting for (and will keep fighting for… until she doesn’t)… is her freedom. She wants to be free of the Briarwoods and the prison they’ve turned the castle that once was her home into. She wants to be free of them, of their torture and punishment.
  7. What song would a siren sing to your character to lure them closer? Why?
  8. It’s less the song and more who they might sound like that would lure Cassandra closer. (And not just because figuring out music in a fantasy D&D-based world is always a quandary for me.) Or maybe it would be a little of both. If a siren sounded like her mother, or any of her sisters, even though she would know better, would logically KNOW that it’s not them, that it couldn’t be them, would stand a damn good chance of getting her to draw closer. They’re her family, the people she longs to see again more than anything. Even knowing they’re dead, even having seen their bodies hanging from the Sun Tree in Whitestone, she would still want to go closer. She would still hope. Still want it to be them.

Or else, the song itself would be something she heard her mother sing, or one of her parents/siblings play. Or a song she’d danced with one of them during a party or a ball that her parents were throwing. Something that reminds her of home. Of family. Both things she misses more than anything.
  9. If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.
  10. Once upon a time, it would have been her mother, one of her siblings. Her father. Even possibly Percy. But there isn’t one, anymore. They’ve all died. Or in Percy’s case, abandoned her for dead after she’d rescued him from the dungeons and the torture he was suffering at the Briarwoods and their associates’ hands. She has complicated feelings about Percy, right now, and she wouldn’t follow him ANYWHERE. She wouldn’t trust him enough to. Wouldn’t trust him enough to not abandon her again. She’d half-expect him to.

Then again, anyone other than him, other than the Briarwoods and their associates she might follow to another world simply to escape Whitestone and her prison. Escaping the Briarwoods and all they’ve done to her, to her family, might be worth the risk. She can survive on her own in whatever new realm she finds herself. Find her own way. It has to be better than Whitestone. Better than the Briarwoods.
  11. If you'd like pixies to change one event in your character's life, what would it be and why?
  12. If I would? I think it would be her being captured by the Briarwoods. It would change so much, and things would be so different for her. She would be spared the torture and the captivity and the suffering. She would be on her own, maybe, or with Percy. Which, if she’s with her brother it would drastically change her feelings about him. She wouldn’t be ALONE. They’d have each other. And even if she WAS alone, she would still be free of the Briarwoods and their influence. Their punishments. Free from the blood-stained halls of Whitestone Castle.

What would she do, if afforded the same escape as Percy?

It might not change her guilt, though. Instead of her guilt towards surviving (and later, guilt at what she’d done), there would be the guilt of surviving and fleeing, abandoning Whitestone and her people. Leaving them behind, to the Briarwoods tender mercies. That might be just as bad to her as all the rest.
  13. What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?
  14. In the future, it may very well be her self-recrimination and guilt. But now? 12-13 years old and in the midst of her captivity with the Briarwoods? It’s absolutely stubbornness and determination. She’s been trying to escape for YEARS (or, a year or two, anyway), has just suffered punishment for being caught after one of said escape attempts, and will be attempting to escape again. No matter how many times she’s dragged back to them. She tries again. (And again, and again… until she stops. Until her stubbornness is beaten and tortured and mentally/magically manipulated away. Until it’s buried so far down, she half-forgets it’s there.)

She keeps trying, keeps going, survives under immense hardship and trauma. Hardship and trauma that is constant and unending. She’s forced to live as a member of the Briarwood family, in a place that used to be her home until they came and tore it all away from her. Filled with memories and blood.
  15. Your character gets to return home, but when they do they learn that they've been gone for hundreds of years. How do they react?
  16. She’s already lost most of her family, and has complicated feelings currently towards the one that remains, so I think she might… almost be relieved. But only if the Briarwoods were long dead, which wouldn’t be guaranteed given that one of them is a vampire. There would be more of a chance of being able to gain her freedom than there would have been had she remained in Whitestone.
